Red Fox Pup

My wife noticed this young Red Fox relaxing on a nice warm rock in our old neighborhood.  It was two doors down and across the street from our old house in Connecticut.

The scientific name of the Red Fox is Vulpes vulpes.
Sadly this pup and his or her entire family were destroyed when Fisher Cats moved into the neighborhood.

Partial Rainbow

My nine year old son used the camera on my phone to snap this picture of a rainbow from the back of my car while driving on the highway in New York state, somewhere close to the Pennsylvania border.

Great Blue Heron on the Erie Canal

I was out for a jog along the Erie Canal this past fall, when I saw this Great Blue Heron come in for a landing nearby.  I snuck up on it and took this picture with my phone.  I'm not positive it's a Great Blue Heron, but I'm reasonably sure.

Humpback Whales Near Juneau, Alaska

I snapped this photo many years ago while on a trip to Alaska.  We visited the capitol, Juneau, and from there we took many interesting side trips including kayaking, whale watching, and visiting the Mendenhal Glacier.  This photo was taken from a boat while we were on a whale watching trip.

Ruby Throated Hummingbird with Bee Balm

I shot this picture in a garden in my backyard when I was living in Connecticut.  The red flowers, called Bee Balm, are great for attracting the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds.  They are Connecticut's only hummingbird species, and their scientific name is Archilochus colubris.  Often there were several of these little birds in the garden at a time.  The sound of their rapidly beating wings is more of a buzz than a hum.

You might be asking yourself why they are called ruby throated.  The males have bright red plumage on their throats, but this is a female.

Vermont Sunset

Today's nature photo was taken about 18 months ago in Vermont.  I was driving home to Connecticut on a Sunday night.  The beautiful sunset caught my eye while traveling on Route 89.  I got off at exit 4, in the town of Randolph, found some high ground, and took this photo with my phone.
